A new platform of platy kaolins from Middle Georgia
Imerys has developed a new platform of large plate diameter kaolins from Middle Georgia, USA. These thin crystal dimension kaolins deliver unique value and cost savings in a variety of paper and board grades.
The new E-Type™ products are available in a variety of particle sizes and shape factors for specific customer applications. The use of these platy kaolins produces bulkier structures with optically effective pore sizes, improving coating hold out and coating coverage due to the large plate diameters. This can allow changes to the base sheet to take advantage of this coverage.
Premium coarse platy pigments
Designed to provide coating coverage and build coating bulk. E800 & E500 have been developed for use in pre-coating and low gloss applications and work especially well when blended with blocky co-pigments such as GCC. The improved coverage allows papermakers to reduce calendering, improve sheet bulk or apply lower top coat weight.

Premium fine platy pigments
The fine E-Type™ platy pigments work well in single coated LWC applications or pre-coat applications when blended with blocky co-pigments. They outperform standard delaminated clays in single coated LWC grades where coating coverage is a key driver for sheet gloss, smoothness and opacity. The improved coverage can allow the papermaker to reduce coat weight or reduce titanium dioxide and/or plastic pigment.
The fine E-Type™ pigments can also reduce binder cost by increasing the starch/latex binder ratio to take advantage of the smoothness benefit.
