Whenever industrial minerals are removed from the ground it is
inevitable that the landscape will be altered, and an ambitious
programme of land reclamation and landscape restoration is in
place to improve the visual impact of our operational areas.
At
IRCC
we view it as sound commercial practice to take care
of the environment by restoring the natural balance and
respecting the wishes of the local communities.
At our mine we aim to only remove trees that are required for
the current mining campaign, resulting in a small footprint.
Once completed the area is reforested with native species that
have been grown in our own nursery, which holds over eleven
thousand seedlings. To date over 40 thousand trees have been
planted. We are planning to plant in excess of 70 thousand
new trees of which over half will come from the local
communities who work closely with
IRCC
. The tree planting
scheme is part of the local income generation programme.
We have dedicated full time environmental staff who have
received extensive training in monitoring our compliance and
working in partnership with various local authorities.
During the mining process water is an essential requirement.
For this reason, we built catchment basins that act like dams
and hold the water required by
IRCC
. These ponds are filled
with water and small amounts of unused kaolin. While this
kaolin settles, the water above it is pumped to be recycled and
re-used in the mining process. 85% of the water used in the
process is recycled from these ponds. A huge environmental
gain,
IRCC
appreciates that water is one of the most precious
assets of the Amazon and the World.
