NEW ‘EUROHUB’ DISTRIBUTION CENTRE
IMERYS Pigments for Paper has enhanced its logistics infrastructure for the European market through the establishment of a new distribution centre in Antwerp. The new facility became operational from the fourth quarter 2007.
An efficient global logistics infrastructure
An efficient global logistics infrastructure is essential to the business. With our network of shipping lines, road, rail and barge suppliers and distribution centres, we are able to provide a high quality, cost-effective and reliable service for the customer, wherever they are in the world. All of our production locations are well served and connected by seaport, rail or road facilities and our objective is to ensure that all products reach their destination, cost effectively, in perfect condition and on time.
In July, 2006 we announced that UK coating kaolin production would cease by the end of 2007. Our paper operations in Cornwall now focus on the production of paper filler kaolins, for which our natural kaolin reserves are best suited. Working closely with our customers, we have transitioned existing UK coating kaolin business to Capim™ coating kaolins, with a corresponding increase in Brazilian kaolin production capacity.
With the increase in Capim™ volumes to the European paper market, we have further enhanced our logistics infrastructure by expanding the shipping capacity from Brazil to Europe, including two new vessels, and the establishment of a new distribution centre in Antwerp.
To ensure IMERYS Pigments for Paper can ship the additional volume from Brazil to Europe, our shipping partner secured an additional vessel in October 2006. She has been refitted to carry liquid and dry bulk.
Why Antwerp?
The decision to locate the new ‘Eurohub’ facility in Antwerp, with Sea-Invest as a strategic partner, was made after the completion of a detailed supply chain study. The project, which was completed in nine months, was one of the fastest of its type in Europe. The dedication and attention to detail of the Imerys/Sea Invest project team has been exemplary in ensuring that this project was achieved on time.
Facilities dedicated to Imerys at the ‘Eurohub’ include:
Quays and berths
mobile cranes and grabs (with de dusting hoppers)
warehouses and weighbridges
a tank farm
a make down plant
liquid and dry bulk barge, short sea coasters, rail and truck loading and discharging facilities
wagon washing (including sophisticated water recycling system)
offices and laboratories
IMERYS Pigments for Paper is committed to working with its customers to better understand their specific needs and expectations, thereby creating overall business efficiencies in the total Value Chain.
The ‘Eurohub’ is now an integral part of the overall logistics strategy, to provide a reliable, cost effective and sustainable service.
This world class facility allows IMERYS Pigments for Paper to focus their activities to realise the synergies and economies of scale that will bring added value to their customers.
