LISTENING TO THE PRINTING & MEDIA INDUSTRY
BY JANET PRESTON, GRAHAM O'NEILL & CHRIS NUTBEEM H
IN THE RAPIDLY CHANGING ENVIRONMENT OF MEDIA EXCHANGE, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT IMERYS
UNDERSTANDS THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR PAPER AND HOW PIGMENT DEVELOPMENTS
CAN ENABLE THE INDUSTRY TO DELIVER QUALITY AND INNOVATION. THIS IS BEST ACHIEVED BY
DISCUSSING DIRECTLY WITH THE MOST SUCCESSFUL PLAYERS IN THE MEDIA BUSINESS; PUBLISHERS,
ADVERTISERS AND PRINTERS AND INCORPORATING THEIR VIEWS INTO OUR PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
PROCESS. AS PART OF THIS, WE HAVE BEEN TALKING TO JOHN CHARNOCK, TECHNICAL DIRECTOR OF THE
ST IVES GROUP, TO DISCUSS THE ISSUES FACING THE PAPER AND PRINTING INDUSTRY AND HIS
THOUGHTS FOR THE FUTURE.
Q: Can you tell us about the structure
of St Ives and your role in it?
H
A:
St Ives Group have a UK focus. (the largest
Print Group quoted on the London Stock
Exchange) and are based on 5 Divisions
each around 20% in size.
· Magazine/Catalogue Division (Web
Division) with fairly major titles such
as Vogue, Time Out, The Economist, BA
Business Traveller and a lot of trade
and technical titles.
· A Direct Mail business which produces
one-piece mailers, statements,
transactions, and shorter run lengths of
one-to-one personalised mail.
· Book Division which produces about
150 million books per year including the
Harry Potter titles.
· SP Group which do all the signage
displays etc that you see in Marks and
Spencers, Sainsburys, George at Asda etc
as well as the store fitting tickets, posters
and banners.
· Service Graphics, an exhibition and
outdoor group, printing building wraps,
for example those that go inside the
IMAX cinemas and Wembley Stadium
banners.
My job title "Technical Director" includes
"all aspects of a technical nature" which
generally means pre-press, press & post-
press business strategy. I report to the
main Board and advise on emerging
technologies and areas of interest. I help
the divisions in deciding their strategy and
focus, equipment purchase, materials,
consumables, you name it!
Q:St Ives are bucking the trend in the Paper
and Printing Industry and making a
healthy profit. Can you explain how you
have adapted your business model?
H
A:
We have had quite a strategic change in
our business over the past year, we have
sold off our North American business and
our focus is now on offering a wider range
of complimentary products and services
to our UK customers .
For example we can go to a brand like
Sainsburys for who we do direct mail, in-
house magazines and brochures. We can
talk to their Marketing Departments about
exhibitions, and whether they want to
have a campaign message across multiple
disciplines. Effectively we can take the
whole gamut from their marketing
message to their store fittings.
Another good example of this is the book
division which has developed a `Sales
Based Fulfilment' system. Depending on
turnover, every week, or month, the
bookshops are contacted to find out how
many books they have sold and how many
are required. The printer then slots in
additional small runs. The risk of excess
stock to the publisher and bookshop is
greatly reduced and they are willing to pay
more for this. So, our latest investment in
the book market is currently short run
"retail on demand" rather than "consumer
print on demand".
These activities are all part of the strategy
for St Ives, to move away from commodity
products, to a value added system, where the
different divisions compliment each other.
THE PRINTING INDUSTRY TODAY,
TRENDS AND ISSUES
Q: What are your views on current paper
grade structures and quality?
H
A:
In the past we never really focussed on
paper other than buying it cheaply,
although now there is more conversation
about properties. The grade structures
were designated historically and are based
on how the paper is manufactured for
example, `super calendered' (SC), or `light
weight coated' (LWC), rather than on its
performance. The grade system should be
based on the papers' quality, brightness,
