...From Friday 15 to Sunday 17 May, 2009, in
line with European Minerals Day, a range of
events plant and quarry tours, presentations
of site restoration and environmental projects
was organised by IMERYS Pigments for Paper
across Europe, Asia and North & South
America to improve the public's awareness
of the issues facing the minerals industry.
The protection of biodiversity was the key
focus for visitors to the IMERYS Pigments for
Paper Sites, with schools, local communities
and the press getting an opportunity to
discover examples of the flora and fauna
found on the restored mining sites.
More than 700 visitors attended the open days
at the four Pigments for Paper sites participating
in the Minerals Day, both in Europe and the
rest of the world; IMERYS Rio Capim Caulim
(RCC) in Brazil, Tünadal in Sweden, Pittong in
Australia, Wheal Martyn and Littlejohns in
Cornwall, UK.
That mineral raw materials and biodiversity
are of global concern, is demonstrated by the
Pigments for Paper plants outside Europe taking
part in the European Minerals Day initiative.
Feedback from the local communities has
been very positive and all visitors were pleased
to have the opportunity to see the operations.
The 2009 European Minerals Day is an
excellent way to inform, educate and
stimulate the general public about the
importance of the minerals sector in
providing raw materials that are essential
for so many everyday products. IMERYS
Pigments for Paper were delighted to be
able to participate in the event.
