CLAY COUNTRY ECO-TOWN
GETS THE GREENLIGHT
D
WE ARE DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE DEPARTMENT
OF COMMUNITIES AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT (DCLG)
CONFIRMED ON 16TH JULY 2009 THAT IMERYS' CLAY
COUNTRY ECO-TOWN, AN INITIATIVE TO REGENERATE THE
MID CORNWALL CLAY AREA IN THE UK, HAS BEEN AWARDED
ECO-TOWN STATUS. THIS IS THE CULMINATION OF A 2 YEAR
PROJECT WHICH HAS INVOLVED IMERYS COMPETING AGAINST
60 OTHER NATIONWIDE SCHEMES FOR THE ACCOLADE.
The Eco-town accreditation is important to IMERYS for a number
of reasons: it puts the national regeneration spotlight firmly
on the Mid Cornwall area, it provides a framework to underpin
delivery of the proposals, it facilitates partnership through
co-operation between the private and public sectors and the
community and finally it encourages innovation and creativity
in delivering a showcase for low carbon sustainable living.
With the backing of the Government in place, work can now
get under way, with our partners and very importantly the
local community, on developing the details of this visionary
scheme which will see the transformation of six of our former
industrial sites in the Mid Cornwall area.

PAPERCON `09 OFFERS SOLUTIONS
FOR A CHANGING WORLD
D
IMERYS participated in TAPPI PaperCon09 at the America's
Center in St. Louis in June. This is the largest paper industry
technical conference held in North America each year. It is a
joint conference led by TAPPI (Technical Association of the Pulp
and Paper Industry) and PIMA (Paper Industry Management
Association). The conference was an opportunity to meet
customers and rouse interest in IMERYS products, especially
the BARRISURFTM products for barrier coatings. Attendance was
good despite the current market conditions, and many current
and future Imerys customers were represented.
The theme of the conference was `Solutions for a Changing World.'
Chief executive officers of two major Imerys customers, NewPage
and Verso, spoke on this theme. Their goals are to expand their
markets and create new products using their existing facilities. As
the companies move to greener products, they are looking for
suppliers to facilitate or lead the transition.
The conference consisted of three days of technical sessions with
expert speakers and panel discussions. John Husband, Lead Scientist
at the IMERYS Par Moor laboratories, was honored with the Coating
and Graphic Arts Technical Award at the TAPPI Gala Dinner.
The IMERYS technical papers were:

IMERYS are pleased to announce that RCC´s communication plan
is one of the finalists in an Award of Best Practices given by Aberje,

IMERYS RCC are delighted to be among the finalists, and we know
we have information and collateral material good enough to win
the prize. Further update in the next issue of Impact.
FASHION IN THE AMAZON
D
IMERYS Rio Capim Caulim (RCC) helps in the organisation of
community work to generate employment and income by way
of economic activities that respect local traditions.
The São João Island project assists women, to develop dressmaking
skills in partnership with NGO Costamazônia. Now in its second
year the project is still growing, and increasingly, being noticed by
the fashion world. The 2nd `Fashion in the Amazon Forum', was held
at the Faculty of Pará (FAP) in April. The São João designers placed
their products on display and held a fashion show, the first of the year!
"The opportunity to show the public the work of the project is very
positive. The art of the island has gained great recognition, we now
receive invitations to participate at events. Moreover, these are good
occasions for us to gain market experience and to make contact
with other professionals in the industry, "said Jacilaine Souza, Social
Worker for IMERYS RCC.
IMERYS Minerals Australia Awarded
for Environmental Actions
D
Earth resources operators Imerys Minerals Australia have been
recognised for their commitment to sustainable development
through the 2009 Strzelecki Awards.
IMERYS Minerals Australia won in the category `Medium Sized
Earth Resource Operation' for its water recycling scheme at its
Pittong Mine, about 35 kilometres south-west of Ballarat, and its
donation of an unused facility for users of the Ballarat to Skipton
rail trail;
Energy and Resources Minister, Peter Batchelor said the Strzelecki
Awards were about recognising and encouraging the sustainable
development of Victoria's earth resources.
"The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to encourage
industries to incorporate environmentally-sustainable practices
into their operations through initiatives such as the Strzelecki
Awards," Mr Batchelor said.
"This year's winners have proven they are leaders in sustainable
development and I hope they provide an example to other
resource operators about how projects can be undertaken."
GETTING CLOSER TO THE
COMMUNITY AT FIPA 2009
q
IMERYS Rio Capim Caulim (RCC) was present at the 9th Fair
Industry Pará (FIPA) from 27th to 30th May at the Hangar

The RCC booth was one of the busiest at the show. "The FIPA

products and investments in technology. The show gave us the
chance to `showcase' our commitment to sustainability and the
recovery of the region where we operate" said the Chief Executive
Officer of IMERYS RCC, Milton Costantin.
