Gold East Plant Delivery
Another on-site facility employing Imerys
know-how is the Gold East mill near Shanghai.
Imerys supplied the technology and built the
facility at Gold East, transferring ownership
after completion. Proprietary GCC processing
methods are now producing premium GCC
for filler and coating applications.
Multi-Pigment Finesse & Innovation
Based on trial work with leading printing and
writing producers, breakthrough applications of
fine platy kaolins have been successful at several
mills in Japan. Novel application of engineered
kaolins from RCC, Brazil, and the ContourTM
brand of fine platy kaolins from Middle Georgia,
USA, have been in use for several years.
Country Manager Ron Underwood notes the
company's multi-pigment capability is growing
in this market. They are experiencing the
highest growth with their Contour Series,
especial ContourTM Xtreme. Says Underwood,
"The continued success of Imerys' PCC
technology through a royalty basis is proving
well suited as a filler for coated papers in Japan."
In addition Imerys' joint venture with Hokuetsu
Paper Mills is now fully operational for the
production of ground calcium carbonate.
Another coated paper producer in Korea has
noted better coverage and gloss, resulting from
the application of ContourTM Xtreme.

Fastest Filler At UPM
Since the summer of 2005 Imerys has been
producing GCC nearby at UPM's paper mill in
Jiangsu Province, two hours from Shanghai.
The GCC plant supplies up to 120 kt/year of
carbonates, formulated from marble powder.
Prior to winning the business at UPM Changshu,
a comprehensive study was made of the
various mineral options related to the grades
of paper planned for the mill. Considerations
included economics, technical requirements of
the paper and market needs. High quality GCC
from a local source was determined to meet the
technical expectations and the right economics.
Says Mark Su, Imerys General Manager for
Greater China, "Our role with filler formulations
for the new paper machine helped set two global
speed records in 2006. You could say that we
have the fastest filler in the world!"
Imerys began the relationship with UPM
Changshu in 2003, supplying their first paper
machine from the Nanling (WuHu) facility,
a wet ground GCC plant with a capacity of
more than 200KM pa. Nanling produces
multiple products for paper filling and specialty
coating applications. The plant is also home
to the Filmlink product line of additives for
breathable film, specialty plastics and rubber
applications.
Higher print quality and lower formulation expenditures,
made possible through multi-pigment formulations, are
becoming the norm, because fibre costs and coating costs
can be lowered at the same time.
